Jewellery is made to be worn and enjoyed. A little care will help keep your pieces looking their best for years to come.

1. Keep jewellery away from beauty products

Perfume, hairspray, moisturiser, hand cream and other everyday products can dull silver and affect gold plating over time.

As a simple rule, put your jewellery on after applying beauty products and remove it before using household cleaning products.

2. Take care around water

Water itself won't harm silver or gold. It's the chlorine, salt, soap and other chemicals that can affect the metal and wear gold plating.

We recommend removing your jewellery before swimming, using a hot tub, bathing or showering — particularly if you are wearing gold-plated jewellery.

Sea water and swimming pools can cause silver to tarnish quickly, sometimes turning it black.

3. Store it carefully

When you're not wearing your jewellery, keep it somewhere dry and away from direct exposure to air.

Our jewellery is packaged in acid-free tissue for a reason, so you can use this when storing your pieces. A jewellery box with separate compartments is also ideal, as it prevents pieces from rubbing against each other.

4. Give silver a gentle polish

Sterling silver naturally tarnishes over time, but it's easy to restore its shine. A soft silver polishing cloth is ideal for gently removing light tarnish and bringing the surface back to life.

Use a light touch, particularly around delicate or personalised pieces.

5. Clean gently

For sterling silver, warm water and a little mild washing-up liquid are usually all you need. Use a soft brush to gently clean around details and hard-to-reach areas, then rinse well and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.

Avoid abrasive cleaners and household cleaning products, which can damage the surface of your jewellery.

6. Avoid DIY cleaning hacks

There are plenty of home remedies for cleaning silver online, but they aren't suitable for all jewellery and some can damage the surface.

It's best to stick to a specialist silver polishing cloth or gentle soap and water rather than experimenting with household products.

What is sterling silver?

Most of our silver jewellery is made from sterling silver. It contains 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper, which gives the metal the strength needed for everyday jewellery.

Sterling silver does not contain nickel.

These care tips apply primarily to sterling silver. Gold-plated, oxidised and solid gold jewellery require slightly different care.
